GUNNER SCHOOL SHADOWSHIP PROGRAM
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Motion Design & Illustration
Lunar North & Boxfort
As one of two students selected for the Gunner School Shadowship Program, I spent three months immersed in the professional environment of Lunar North, a Detroit-based creative studio. The experience gave me the opportunity to observe and participate in a collaborative studio workflow while developing my skills in motion design and 3D animation.
Throughout the program, I worked hands-on in Adobe After Effects and Blender, building a stronger understanding of animation, 3D modeling, lighting, materials, and motion principles. I explored how graphic design concepts translate into movement and space, while learning how designers and animators approach creative problem-solving in a professional setting.
Beyond software development, the shadowship gave me insight into the day-to-day realities of working in a creative studio—from receiving feedback and iterating on ideas to collaborating with other creatives and understanding how concepts evolve from initial exploration into finished work.
The program pushed me outside of my traditional graphic design practice and encouraged me to approach design through motion, dimensionality, experimentation, and storytelling. I completed the program with a stronger foundation in 3D and motion design, a broader creative toolkit, and a better understanding of how I want to incorporate animation and emerging techniques into my practice.
